Smart wireless pill bottles that automatically track and improve adherence in real-time

What is it?

AdhereTech makes smart wireless pill bottles that automatically track and improve adherence in real-time. Our solution is currently used by many of the top firms in healthcare to distribute medications to patients, as well as to monitor patients post-discharge. The value of our solution is that is doesn’t require the patient to perform any new behaviors in order to use the tool, and it delivers real-time interventions directly to the patient and/or caregiver based on the patient’s real-time actions and needs.

How is it used?

AdhereTech bottles measure when the cap is opened or closed, as well as the amount of medication remaining in the bottle. All data is collected and analyzed passively, and the system only intervenes when it’s necessary. The cellular technology allows our bottles to connect from anywhere on the planet and work right out of the box, with no setup needed by the patient. AdhereTech’s bottles are used just like normal pill bottles, down to the standard child-resistant cap, so there’s no processes for patients to learn.

What technologies does it incorporate?

The system incorporates: 3G cellular technology, sensors, data capture/transmission, live data analysis, live phone interventions, data routed to live care teams, HIPAA-compliant transfer & storage of data, and a number of sophisticated back-end software tools.

How does it work?

Here’s how AdhereTech’s solution works: As patients use AdhereTech bottles, adherence data is wirelessly sent from the bottles to our servers, where it is analyzed in real-time. The system automatically compares what patients are doing, to what they should be doing. If a dose is missed, AdhereTech reminds the patient and/or caregiver via a series of customizable features, such as automated phone calls or text messages – as well as on-bottle lights and chimes. All messaging is customizable on both the population and individual-patient level.

Yet AdhereTech’s smart pill bottle is much more than an adherence tool – at its core it is a seamless monitoring solution. When AdhereTech’s system notices certain patterns of non-adherence, it can solicit feedback from patients via text or phone call, asking them why a dose was missed. The patients’ responses can then be routed to live healthcare practitioners for immediate intervention. For example, if a patient is not taking her/her medication due to an adverse event, memory issues, monetary issues, or dosing confusion (all of which are common reasons for non-adherence), AdhereTech can gather this information in real-time, and immediately route it to a live care manager or social worker for intervention. AdhereTech is already using this feature to improve care for patients across multiple disease states. (Compare this to the status quo, when the lack of adherence would first be realized during the patient’s next doctor’s appointment – if that appointment even occurs in the first place. Please also compare this to pre-scheduled phone calls that occur without any insight into the patient’s actual behavior or need for assistance, which can lead to annoyance and habituation from the patient.)

Who uses it?

The patient uses the bottle, but the data can be shared with any party (e.g. caretakers, family members, healthcare providers) that the patient consents to have access.

Why does it help?

But here’s what truly makes AdhereTech unique, and why AdhereTech is built to solve these unique problems, compared to virtually every other tool in the digital health space: The flaw with all other monitoring solutions is that they require non-engaged patients, who already have issues managing their health, to set-up and learn complex tools. This is true whether a patient has to download and engage with an app every day, learn how to use a new device, charge a device every few days, or sync a device to Wi-Fi/Bluetooth. Non-engaged patients won’t perform these tasks.

AdhereTech is the first monitoring tool that it built specifically with the non-engaged patient’s user-experience in mind. The bottles require zero setup or learning curve. The cellular technology allows our bottles to connect from anywhere on the planet and work right out of the box, with no setup. Additionally, our bottles are used just like normal pill bottles, down to the standard child-resistant cap, so there’s no processes to learn. All data is collected and analyzed passively, and the system only intervenes when it’s necessary. For the less tech-savvy, AdhereTech intervenes via automated phone calls to landlines, while more tech-savvy patients can receive text message interventions to cell phones or smartphones. If a patient does have a phone, he/she can still receive on-bottle reminders via lights and chimes. The battery in an AdhereTech bottle lasts 200+ days on a single charge, and the bottles are rechargeable as needed, just like a cell phone, using a standard micro-USB cord (AdhereTech provides these cords, which are also the most common charging cords on the market today).
